Using a resistance training band to build muscle or lose weight is not a new concept. Elastic resistance exercises, such as the use of elastic tubing equipment, has been used for almost a century. It originally was used as a fitness technique, but eventually progressed to be used as a rehabilitation device. Today it is used commonly in both fitness and rehabilitation facilities around the world. Personal trainers are now supplementing their clients free weight workouts with resistance training bands, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and chiropractors are some of the professions that have seen the benefits of recommending users to take look at this system.
But, the actual history of strength training began with the ancient Greeks. Progressive resistance training dates back to at least the 6th century BC, when legend has it that wrestler Milo of Croton trained by carrying a newborn calf on his back every day until the calf was fully grown. Another Greek, the physician Galen, described strength training exercises using the Halteres (an early form of dumbbell) in the 2nd century AD.
The dumbbell was joined by the barbell in the latter half of the 19th century. Early barbells had hollow globes that could be filled with sand or lead shot, but by the end of the century these were replaced by the plate-loading barbell we use today. Strength training using isometric exercises was popularized by Charles Atlas from the 1930′s onwards. The 1960′s saw the gradual introduction of exercise machines into the still-rare strength training gyms of the time.
In 1996 Blake Kassel the President of Bodylastics International had an idea for a full Body workout system that used elastic tubes to generate resistance. After 2 years of designs and redesigns, the Bodylastics workout system was born and launched in 1998. Over the years, Bodylastics has become an innovator and category leader for resistance band manufacturing and elastic band exercises. The Bodylastic workout bands are a great alternative for today’s home fitness gym. With the economy still recovering, the average person is not able or willing to pay prices set by personal trainers. Buying workout DVD’s is a great idea but you will still need some form of a home gym to generate maximum results. For the working professional, time and facilities become an issue. Included with the Bodylastic workout bands is a traveling bag that you can easy take your workout on the road.
